A Young Girl Was Laughing (by the window)
Peter J Stein 2010

verse 1
A young girl was laughing by the window,
Happy and carefree for all I know,
Waiting for a taxi to Penn Station in the snow,
A young girl was laughing by the window

verse 2
Suddenly it started to rain,
Unexpected showers had flooded all the drains,
I wondered about her, Did she catch her train,
Suddenly it started to rain.

verse 3
The afternoon arrived in clouds of gray,
The sun peeked through, on a cloudy, windy day,
The sunset chased the sunlight and the sunbeams flew away,
Darkness rolled in softly and the night was here to stay.

instrumental

verse 4
I remember a day when my mother cried,
Father turned away from the pain she hid inside,
Could not accept her failures, that she desperately denied,
I remember a day when my mother died.

verse 5:
Yesterday an idea came to me,
The laughter of the girl by the window set me free,
Don’t have to climb Mt. Everest, Don’t have to swim the sea,
Yesterday an idea came to me.

verse 6
Found a little bird in the sand,
One of her wings was in pain,

Picked her up so gently, And held her in my hand
Now I will never be the same.

verse 7
A young girl was laughing by the window,
An arrow pierced my heart, and would not let go,
A smell of purple flowers, it’s no wonder how I know,
A young girl was laughing, by the window. (repeat and fade)
